Ovid’s Vacant Day 19TH CENTURY ENGRAVING of Ovid BY J W COOK

Of the 16th February, Ovid says: ‘Next day is vacant.’ This is encouraging to the Almanac writer because some days are a little dull. The writer can fill in with generalities, find some birthdate or other of some Great Person of History. So, if Ovid can just say nothing much of consequence happened, then that is good enough for me.

So, here is a video of the Blossoms Band playing ‘My Vacant Days’. It starts about 40 seconds into the YouTube video.

To hear why Ovid abandoned the Fasti when only halfway through the year, look at my post here.

To read Ovid’s almanac of the year, the ‘Fasti’, here is the translation I use.

  1. Thanks for refreshing memories of a great poet studied in Latin class a long time ago!

Ovid’s Metamorphoses later provided marvellous legends to share with my pupils.
