Our study unites these cities as does the Channel Tunnel, which takes us from the heart of London to the heart of Paris.

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM

London is home to a wealth of the world's finest art treasures. A noted art expert and historian discusses London's major art collections. Lectures illuminate the Renaissance and Baroque schools, the place of portraiture in art history and 18th-, 19th-, and 20th-century schools. We take field trips to the most important collections including the National Gallery; Victoria and Albert Museum; Wallace Collection; Dulwich Picture Gallery; the Courtauld Institute at Somerset House; the British Museum; Tate Britain, with its collection of British national art; and the Tate Modern, the largest museum of modern art in the world. We also enjoy Cambridge's Fitzwilliam Museum.

LIVING ARCHITECTURE: LONDON'S PEOPLE, BRICKS & MORTAR

We look at London's architectural history from inside out. How did Londoners lead their lives? Decorate their homes? Travel? What did they eat, wear, and do for amusement? Drawing on social history and literature, art and architecture, we see how people - from high-born to lowly - lived at different stages in time. We gain an appreciation for the practical uses of architecture, from servant quarters to state apartments, coffeehouse to assembly hall. Led by an art historian, we breathe the life of London's streets.

Itinerary: Arrival London, 14 nights; departure London. Schedule and costs on page .

Accommodations: Centrally located hotel; double-occupancy bedrooms, private bathrooms; limited singles at supplemental cost.

Notes: One lunch and one dinner are excluded from the program cost so hostelers can explore area restaurants.
