ART HISTORY COURSES

Cultural Heritage Resouces runs several courses for road scholar on the history of London's Art and Architecture.

London and Paris are among the world's greatest cities. Both are richly endowed with museums, art galleries, and a prodigious variety of architecture illustrating their status as historic national capitals and centers of culture. In this two-week program, we gain an appreciation for both the distinctiveness and parallels between British and French inspiration and influence in the arts and architecture. Our study unites these cities as does the Channel Tunnel, which takes us from the heart of London to the heart of Paris.

Note: Extensive standing and walking in museums, galleries, and public places. Public transportation will be used in Paris.

From masterpieces of the National Gallery to the breathtaking Tate Modern, we focus on European painting and its development. We delve into great collections at the Victoria and Albert Museum; gaze on old masters from the Italian, Flemish, Dutch, German and Spanish schools at the Wallace Collection and the Dulwich Picture Gallery; and admire famed French Impressionist paintings at the Courtauld Gallery. A special feature is a field trip to the university city of Cambridge with its acclaimed art collections.

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM

London is home to a wealth of the world's finest art treasures. A noted art expert and historian discusses London's major art collections. Lectures illuminate the Renaissance and Baroque schools, the place of portraiture in art history and 18th-, 19th-, and 20th-century schools. We take field trips to the most important collections including the National Gallery; Victoria and Albert Museum; Wallace Collection; Dulwich Picture Gallery; the Courtauld Institute at Somerset House; the British Museum; Tate Britain, with its collection of British national art; and the Tate Modern, the largest museum of modern art in the world. We also enjoy Cambridge's Fitzwilliam Museum.

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM

Historic yet cutting-edge, London is a great world city. Lectures and field trips lead us through living architecture, step by step, to modern times. We explore Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, 17th-century Ham House, Denis Severs' restored Georgian House, aristocratic mansions Kenwood and Apsley, the singular homes of Carlyle and Lord Leighton, the office/home of Sir John Soane, and Art Deco Eltham Palace. We also examine Hampton Court, Palladian villas, merchant and middle class homes, and modern houses by Gropius, et al. Excursions to suburban Hampstead, Spitalfields silk weaving area, the Museum of London, and Tate Britain provide a feel for grand squares, mews, and side roads. We enjoy a theme dinner with Tudor dancers and a ride on the London Eye.
