Covent Garden is one of London's trendiest market and shopping area. The area has a long and varied trading tradition which dates back a thousand years earlier, when it was the the centre of the Saxon Market town of Lundenwic (Note - Pronounced Lurndenvic). In the medieval period the area was owned by the Church and was known as the Convent Garden. In the 17th Century it became the first Piazza or Square in London and the home of West end Theatre. Later in the Century the area began a descent downhill somewhat when the fruit, vegetable and flower market opened. |
